New Beginnings
Summary: Drusilla never existed; instead, Angelus turned Buffy in 1860, who he believed was his mate after consulting a Seer. Buffy has Drusilla’s visions, but Angelus does not drive her insane. He’s not the same vampire we saw in S2 in Buffy.

Chapter One

Elizabeth, or Buffy as she liked to be called, woke up suddenly from a strange dream. She sighed and rolled out of her bed, walking over to the chipped water basin. She took a sip of water and then got back in bed, holding her thin blanket tightly. She was soon fast asleep once again.

Over in the corner of the room, where he had hidden, Angelus smiled. It had taken almost a month to learn where this slayer’s home was and another couple of days to get an invitation into the girl’s home. He had been watching her sleep now for the better part of the month. Now, he was convinced the Master’s seer was not mistaken. This girl was his mate. He could feel it in his blood. She was absolutely perfect, despite her slight insanity due to her visions. He could hardly wait to make her his.

Buffy tolled toward him in her sleep and he moved back to his post by her bed, reaching out to stroke her cheek.

“Angel…” she whimpered, obviously dreaming and he smiled, rubbing her back, weighing his options. He could turn her now, but how would that help anything? Other than getting her out of the watcher’s house, he really couldn’t see the good that would do. Plus, when she woke, she would only want him for sex, nothing more. No, he wanted this girl to be his in every way that was possible. So what to do? He made a decision without even thinking about it. He would simply take her back to his home. Be around him all the time would surely make her fall for him.

He swiftly picked her up and wrapped her in the blanket. Then, cradling her like a newborn child, he left through the servant’s stairwell. He arrived at his home with his precious cargo and he laid her in a bed in a guestroom before going to bed himself.

Buffy woke later that morning and barely had time to register her surroundings when a young maid bustled into the room, carrying a tray loaded down with food, apparently for her. Buffy’s stomach growled loudly at the variety of aromas.

“Oh!” the maid exclaimed, nearly dropping the tray as she set it on a nearby table. “You’re awake, miss.”

“Where am I?” Buffy asked, climbing out of bed. She looked down and noted that she was at least in her own clothes.

“You’re in London.” The maid replied, obviously only revealing as much as she was instructed.

“Yes.” Buffy said impatiently, tapping her foot, “But where am I, specifically?”

“Oh,” the maid brushed the question off with a wave of her hand. “No need for that now, come sit and eat.”

Buffy was getting really annoyed with all this, “Is this a test from the watchers?” she asked, her voice barely laced with hate.

She heard a bark of laughter and turned toward the bedroom door. A tall man, no-a vampire, was standing in the doorway. As he closed the door, she took the time to observe him. His posture seemed at ease and for some reason that made her at ease. In all her years slaying vampires, she had never known one to be so, for lack of a better word, breathtakingly beautiful.

He turned toward her and smiled, showing perfect teeth. “Hi, Buffy, I’m Angelus.”
He held out a hand. Maria watched, wondering at the differences in her master toward the petite blond, but she brushed it off and returned to her duties, leaving vampire and slayer alone.

“The Scourge of Europe.” Buffy said, inclining her head to observe him, reluctantly shaking his hand.

“Aye, you’ve heard of me.” He said and Buffy noticed his Irish accent, just like in her dreams and visions.

“In passing,” she quirked her eyebrow at him.

Once again, Angelus marveled at this young slayer, never before had anyone, not even a past slayer, looked him with such nonchalance, let alone mock him. It raised his respect for her. He was glad she wasn’t a meek brainless warrior for the watchers to use.

“So what am I doing here?” she asked, breaking into his thoughts.

“What better way to get to know you?” he said vaguely.

It was her that laughed this time. “You get to know your enemies before fighting them?”

“Keep thy friends close and thy enemies closer.” He quotes, touching her cheek.

“Hm, well with me, it’s generally me plus vampire equals dust.” She said, before punching him square in the nose.

He had known she would fight this at first, but the punch still brought his demon face to the fore and he punched her back. The action launched them into an intricate dance. They were evenly matched, when he punched, she blocked, when she kicked, he ducked. However, it wasn’t long before she had grabbed a chair leg that had broken sometime in the scuffle and straddled him, pressing the stake to his chest.

“You don’t want to do that.” He said softly, changing back to his human face.

Hesitance flickered in her eyes and she faltered. He took the opportunity to take the stake out of her hand and move them to a sitting position.

“Why am I here?” she whispered.

“Sure you know.” He answered, “Surely you can feel it.”

She sighed and nodded. “You’re the one that’s been haunting my visions and dreams, my dark knight.” She laughed bitterly. “We’re destined…” she whispered.

He smiled, despite the situation. He had heard rumors of this slayer having visions, but he had not known for sure.

“So, you want to turn me?” she asked.

“No, sweet.” He replied, brushing her hair back from her face. She gave him a disbelieving look. “Not yet.”

“Why?” she asked. “Obviously you know what I saw-we will be together. I’ve tried to stop my visions before-and they would just manifest in a different way. The end result is always the same.”

“Because, I want you to love me and I want to love you.” He explained, “You make me feel different than anyone else before, I never even felt this way when I was human. My blood sings when you’re around.”

She snorted, “You have no soul. What do you know about love?”

“Us demons care more for others like us than we let on” he replied, just as the door came open again.

“Angel-I’ve been looking everywhere for you. What on earth…” she short blonde woman stopped as she noticed Buffy. “Who is this? Angel, you shouldn’t play with your food.” She admonished teasingly.

“Dar, this is the one the seer told us about.” Angelus said. Buffy stayed quiet, she wasn’t quite sure what to think of this new vampire.

Darla’s smile lost a few watts. “Oh, how nice.” She replied.

Angelus nodded, “We’ll go hunting later, you know, when it’s dark.” He said patronizingly.

Darla ignored his comment, “A letter came for you, from Penn.” She said, instead of leaving.

“We’re supposed to meet him in Madrid in a month. I’ll get to it later.” He replied. Darla finally got the hint and left.

“Penn? Madrid?” Buffy asked.

“Penn is my childe and we don’t stay together. We meet up every six months or so to catch up.”

Buffy nodded. She was amazing at the pride she saw in Angelus’ eyes when he mentioned his childe. Never before had she seen a vampire show emotion. “What about me? Do I get packed up and thrown on top of the carriage?”

Angelus chuckled. “Of course not, you’ll stay in the carriage with Darla and me.”

“What if I don’t want to go?”

“You can leave.” Angelus revealed, “But to what? Your watcher? I know you don’t want to be there.”

“So? I don’t desire to be a bloodsucking fiend either.” She said stubbornly.

“Yes, well.” He got up and sat down at the table with her food. “That is neither here not there. Now eat your breakfast. I can hear your stomach growling.”

Buffy blushed slightly. She was famished. She sat and warily sniffed before taking a bite. She finished eating quickly and they talked a bit more. Angelus agree to let her stay at the mansion with the servants and minions if she had not let him turn her by then, which she was sure she wouldn’t. He left soon after, telling her she could roam the house freely, except the basement levels.

She stayed in the house a week before anything else happened. She was still not a vampire, but it was not for lack of trying on Angelus’ part. She just kept refusing, even though another one of her visions had shown her that she was indeed meant to be a vampire. He seemed to respect her wishes, and did not even kiss her. They held hands once, but it was only for a minute. She just still wasn’t sure about him. Anyway, Angelus burst into her room one night, throwing the few clothes she had commandeered from Darla and toiletries into a small bag.

“Get up.” He ordered, “We’re leaving.”

She put down the book she had been reading by candlelight. Reading had become one of her favorite things to do, ironically, since she hated reading when she was with her watcher. “What? Why?”

Angelus sneered and grasped her hand, leading her to the door. “The Master has made a surprise visit, to see his favorite childe. I don’t want him to know that you are here. We’re going to make our way to Madrid and Darla will meet us there when she can.” He said. No, the master seeing her would definitely not bode well for his tiny slayer.

The blood drained from her face. As much as she did not want to be with her watcher, as far as she was concerned, Wesley Windom-Pryce could kiss her ass, she did not want to die by the Master’s hand. She hadn’t even accepted what she knew was her destiny, to die by Angelus.  She stayed quiet as the footman readied the carriage and was ensconced safely into it. When she continued to stay silent, however, Angelus tucked her against his side, running his fingers through her hair in a way that he instinctively knew would calm her.

“Angelus-“suddenly she stopped and grasped her head.

“Buffy, what is it?” he asked, holding her small face in his hands, “What do you see?”

“Chaos,” she whispered, “The pawns don’t know they’re getting played and the king is getting all the laughs.” She giggled and put her hand on his cheek. “But my Angel revels in the disorder.”

Angelus’ brow furrowed and he just pulled her back to him, allowing her ramblings to go on for now. He wondered if this is how her visions always were, he remembered her speaking in riddles a few days before, when she had had a vision. After a few minutes, the ramblings stopped and she seemed lucid enough to talk to.

“Buffy, why did you get so scared back there?” he asked gently.

“Angelus, I don’t want him to kill me.” She revealed. “He’s the most powerful vampire alive and ever since the Cruciamentum Wesley has wanted me to go against him.”

Angelus growled; he hated this watcher. “Well, you won’t die, at least not by him.”

She smiled at him and he pulled a small book out of his deep pocket and moved so she was leaning against his chest. He began to read the words she couldn’t see because of the night. She quickly began to fall asleep, listening to the Irish lilt in his voice. It had quickly become her favorite sound. But, he didn’t seem to want her to fall asleep, he kissed and neck gently and she twisted to face him, barely able to see him in the dark of the carriage, her eyes tired and alert at the same time. He smiled at her and she tentatively kissed him. He closed his eyes and tried to deepen the kiss, but she pulled back.

“Angel, I don’t want to be evil. I don’t think I could take it.” She whispered.

He smiled at the nickname, he had been waiting for her to use it for real, and not just in her dreams when she called out to him. “I don’t think you could ever be truly evil.” He said honestly. “You are far too beautiful for that.”

“In my vision…” she started, her eyes filling with tears. “ I was a vampire- and I was killing my friends.” She shuddered at the thought. “Angel, promise me, you’ll never let me do that.” She looked in his eyes, searching his for a way out of the horror she had witnessed.

“Of course. I’ll take you away. You won’t ever see them again.” He was lying and she knew it, but she allowed herself to be comforted by his words. She wanted this; she didn’t want all her responsibilities anymore. “We’ll always be together love, no burdens, no guilt; we don’t have a care in the world, other than where we want to go and what we want to do. You’ll finally be free of your duty.”

Oh god, she wanted all of that so bad. /NO! I’m the slayer! / She argued with herself.

“Give in, Buffy.” He whispered, nipping at her neck. “You’ll want for nothing; anything you desire will be yours.”

He continued to place soft kisses along her neck, making her arch her neck to provide him better access to it. She moaned softly at the feel of his lips on her and continued to wage a battle with herself. /What do I have to lose really? / She mused. /I only have two friends, and Willow and Xander would get along well enough without me. Wesley would be glad to be free of the burden of having to care for me. My parents are dead, not that they would care too much if they were alive. She had no inheritance, no land, and no hope of being married. She was destined to die young. At least with Angelus, she would have someone to love her forever and she knew he loved her. It might not be in the way that a human would love someone, he wasn’t capable of that but she could see a form of love in his eyes for her. She also knew he treated her differently than others. The first day he had been nice to Darla only for her benefit. She guessed he was trying not to scare her. She had seen him since with Darla and servants and minions and he was cruel, not without a cause usually, but definitely not the sweet vampire she was used to. /

She nodded slowly; she really did want all that he promised her. To finally be free, it was a dream she had long since given up, until now. Now it seemed that she was finally going to be free from the restraint she felt since she had been called. “Will it hurt?”

He stroked her cheek, letting his hand fall to stroke her neck, where his mark would soon be. “No sweet, relax, it’ll be over soon and then you’ll wake up soon.”

Well, he lied.

It did hurt, but only for a moment, then she was filled with the most intense pleasure imaginable that mingled with the pain until it was one. She was in complete agony and ecstasy at the time same time. She wondered if she was dying, and then realized she really was. She struggled for a minute, unsure of her decision, but Angelus didn’t stop drinking from her and held her to him, and began rubbing her back soothingly. She vaguely noticed something warm, sweet and powerful filling her mouth and she gulped it down, wanting to get more of the wonderful liquid, and then realized she was drinking his…her sire’s blood before she lost all thoughts and awareness and Angelus laid her down on the seat of the carriage and called to the driver to stop at the next Inn they passed. He would not allow his mate to awaken in the cramped carriage.
